Originally, the site of today's Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf near Salzburg was occupied by the Saint Nicholas Church. But due to the damages caused by floods at the end of the 19th century, the old church had to be demolished between 1906 and 1913.
A decade later the foundation stone for today’s Silent Night Chapel was placed on the site. Its festive inauguration took place on August 15, 1937; since then it has become an attraction for thousands of pilgrims and journalists each year who are looking for the origin of the song.
